IMAC is proud to have a role in supporting the COVID-19 Immunisation Programme for New Zealand and has been contracted by the Ministry of Health to provide education and support to all health professionals and allied workforces during the rollout. Learn more about our role in the programme.

We have a focus on increasing New Zealand’s workforce of confident, culturally competent vaccinators to deliver approved COVID-19 vaccines. This workforce can also support the Influenza Immunisation Programme and the MMR catch-up programmes active in 2021.

We are also supporting the allied workforce in the rollout, including health care providers who are non-vaccinators but are key communicators with our communities.

The makeup of our COVID-19 vaccinator workforce in New Zealand

We have a large number of health professionals able to support the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in New Zealand. Here is a snapshot of our workforce:

  • 7666 vaccinators have completed COVID-19 vaccinator training (16 June 2021)
  • Most of these are from our existing pool of authorised vaccinators (approx. 5,400)
  • Our regular vaccinator workforce also includes GPs (approx. 3,800), pharmacists (1,600) and the Defence Force (100).

In addition, we have:

  • More than 4,500 additional health care professionals from a range of professions who have now completed the provisional vaccinator training, which is an alternative pre-requisite for COVID-19 vaccinator training for health professionals who are not part of the regular vaccinator workforce or authorised vaccinators.

Non-vaccinating Health Workforce

Not all those in the health workforce will become vaccinators, but everyone plays a vital role in supporting the COVID Vaccination Programme. Regardless of your role, if you have contact with people considering having a COVID vaccine, it will be ideal if you can support their decision-making by providing accurate information. We will be creating free learning opportunities for this workforce and in the meantime we have a brief introductory guide to the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme available.
