Overview
This course is for Pharmacy Technicians, to support the superb work pharmacies have been doing with administering COVID-19 vaccinations in Aotearoa.
Pharmacy Technicians who complete this course can be involved in the storage and preparation of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. As usual, their work will continue to be supervised and signed off by an appropriately trained person i.e. a Pharmacist Vaccinator. This course does not cover vaccine administration.
Who can take the course
This course is for qualified pharmacy technicians, or those who are currently enrolled in the pharmacy technician training and have completed a minimum of six months of the course.
It is also suitable for registered nurses and pharmacists seeking more detailed information about vaccine preparation.
What the course covers
The online content covers vaccine storage and handling, cold chain requirements and preparation of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The course consists of online modules (approximately 2 hours learning) followed by a theory assessment. This is followed by an onsite practical assessment and sign off by the vaccinating supervisor at the worksite.
How to access the course
The course is available free of charge through the Immunisation Advisory Centre’s (IMAC) online learning. Once you’ve logged in, navigate to the COVID courses category and select the subcategory ‘Other courses’. From there you can ‘join’ the course and complete at your leisure.
